Welcome to my journey!
I am an artist and an art teacher but I wouldn't stop there. I am a personal reflection teacher, a virtual teacher, a problem solving teacher, a group discussion teacher, a life skills teacher, and much more for my students. As I delve into the art of teaching, I am actively navigating my role in my students lives. I am present to teach them art, but I am also present to understand, reflect, and support each individual student on a day to day basis.
The study of art education teaches students a variety of skills and knowledge. The art lessons that I design are infused with opportunities for critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration. As an art educator, I feel that the process of making art is just as important as the end product.
The arts are imperative to a child’s cognitive development. A child’s creative thinking process is to be consistently nurtured and explored as they learn from their own experiences and processes as well as the information I share with them. Every student has the ability to think and explore creatively, it is about giving them the allowance to do so.
PAUSE
AND
REFLECT
In my teaching practice, I have adopted the iterative design process; create, observe, reflect, refine, repeat. This is a never ending cycle of reflection and refinement. I also apply this same process to my teaching practice. I learn from my students' successes and failures, and with this data, I shift my curriculum in order to be responsive to their needs.
Adaptation and flexibility is key. I am present as not only an art teacher, but a resource, a supporter, and my students biggest fan. I will continuously challenge their abilities to adapt to my lessons, as I challenge myself to always adapt with them. I will always allow students to have their own voice in my classroom. I am not only teaching, but I will always be learning with them as I go.
