ARTIST STATEMENT
My body of work consists of accumulative sculptures. Through experimentations of red clay and mixed materials, I depict abstract renditions of fungus, cells and mutations, primarily what I feel lies beneath the human skin. Focusing on installation art, I utilize the floor and walls to represent macro zoom ideas of cell mutations. Color plays an important role in my work as I discover assorted moods and emotions.Â
Crocheting within my practice allows for mixed material and tactile opportunities. Through constant experimentations I am discovering a relationship between form, color, and material. I challenge the relationship of clay and textile materials by combining the two together; one very physically hard material and one physically soft.Â
I am interested in the small stitches that form a larger piece to encourage my viewer to pay attention to the accumulation aspect. The small accumulative assemblages that form a larger piece represent how humans are constructed of tiny microscopic cells.
The human body is a large part of my work. It explores the curiosity of what cells would look like if the human eye could physically view them. I am curious about the idea of contagions and cell mutations; the way humans look under a microscope is simply a product of different patterns. I want to discover my own answers through this work
